test drive meme (#2)

Test Drive Meme

The Pan Pacific Defense Corps was usually offered any of a variety of local buildings to set up their testing centers. For reasons of access and availability, most testing clinics were set up in central areas for any given community. Those of the PPDC staff on hand vary in their personal intensity. Some of the men and women wearing Strike Group insignia seemed overly serious, to the point of frowning with intensity at some of the youngest checking in for this testing round. Those from the K-Science division are tight with nervous energy as they direct prospective cadets through various activities. Everything was meant to measure potential, looking for that spark that meant they had somebody who was Drift Compatible.

The majority of people were turned away after the first series of seemingly random tests, officials looking in eyes, placing odd looking contraptions over heads, asking for people to play a series of short games, one even in a virtual reality set-up.

( SCENARIO ONE )

If you are still here now, you've made it past the first cut. You'll be sat down in a room with the rest who have made it this far, then systematically led into smaller interview rooms as pairs. If you came with a partner, they're your first interview candidate. If you came on your own, all your interviews are random assignment.

All who have been asked to stay are required to sit through and conduct a series of short peer to peer interviews. The questions are straightforward.
  1. What kind of pets would you like to own?
  2. What game do you gravitate toward first in an arcade?
  3. What does the fox say?
  4. Where do you squeeze your toothpaste tube to get toothpaste on your toothbrush?
  5. What do you believe the Drift is like?
Peer to peer interviews last for half an hour to an hour, and each person is asked to participate in at least three peer-to-peer interviews. There is no punishment for going off script. There is a one-way mirror looking into each interview area, and one door leading into the room with a small panel of glass located on the door. There is a clock on the wall in each room. The time they report is odd when examined. These are not digital clocks, but timers, counting up time since the last Kaiju attack.

( SCENARIO TWO )

You've been accepted into the Jaeger Academy. You've been assigned to your barracks, issued your uniform and necessities, shown the overall layout of the Shatterdome, and told the wake up call is at 0530. You're settling in to the Academy schedule, and for many, it may be brutal indeed.

When you're brought into the indoor swimming pool, it's to an overwhelming stench of chlorine. Your swimsuits are all the same for the men, simple swim-trunks, one uniform blue. Women wear a blue and white racer style swimsuit, in the same cut across the board. Uniformity doesn't disappear for swimming lessons.

Lessons start out basic, teaching each Cadet to rely on themselves and each other to keep them afloat. From there, maneuvers get more complicated. Learning safe diving techniques, practicing proper holds to keep an unconscious or panicked partner afloat. Speed, agility, and endurance: all will be in demand.

Then you start hearing rumors about full uniform swims coming up the next session.

Please set up your own scenarios as you like. The above two scenarios are suggestions. Anything goes!

"Hopefully."

Catherine is dressed simply in her lab coat and uniform as well, unhappy to be here, but doing her best for the students as she's been so kindly asked. She isn't going to cheerlead--let's leave this up to the nurse--and she's not really going to encourage. However, she will provide a snarky remark or two, as needed.

"Hopefully, or else we'll lose our jobs." She's still smiling. It wasn't a threat, just a simple fact.

She faces the other woman. "My name is Cherche, by the way. I just transferred from the France branch of the PPDC." She extends a hand out to shake. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

"What a shame..." She sounds as if she's hardly paying attention for a moment as she observes the students some more, and there's a delayed reaction to the intro.

"Catherine Halsey." Handshakes are acceptable, so Catherine will juggle her things so that she has a hand free enough to shake. "I'm in research and development, for the most part. I've hopped a few Shatterdomes, helping with the incoming pilots and making sure they're fit for duty." And now she's here. Seems like an odd fit, at times, but she works hard, noticeably hard.

My my, well, if she's more interested in making snarky comebacks than making new friends then she should have just said so. There's no need to make an extra effort just for her. These were thoughts running in Cherche's head as she was left hanging for a handshake. She will store those ugly thoughts in a metaphorical box in her head next to another metaphorical box of recipes that she'd try on her son when she gets a chance to visit.

"A few Shatterdomes? How you've worked in more than one is impressive." Because despite her doubts, there was no need to let bad first impressions ruin everything. And that's genuinely an impressive feat. "I used to be a volunteer nurse but here I am."

The handshake occurs, but yes, it's a moment before she gets herself sorted out. She doesn't seem scattered so much as overly equipped for long days and her own short amount of patience. At least Catherine is kind enough to pay attention, right?

"I've been shunted around, yes, but I enjoy it. It's better than being stuck in one place." A nod, now. "And if you're a nurse, I'm sure we'll see much more of each other."

That's a question that should never be asked in person. Cherche's used to being too honest.

"I used to think the same about traveling, but I guess I might be getting old." And slightly homesick. She'll be sending an email home later, if she doesn't pass out on her bed before that happens.

"Why? Do you get sick easily, Miss Hasley?"

"Getting old? Too old to travel?"

Miss. It gets a little bit of a sideways glance. Halsey is used to being called "doctor", she supposes, so it's odd to be anything else. She hasn't been called "miss" in ages.

"I'm a physician, in addition to everything else. If they're injured in training, it's likely I'll be the one coming to you for reports on their condition."

"Too old to fly. I don't think my vision will stay 20/20 forever."

She smiles at that sideway glance. If she wanted to be called a doctor, she should have said so. In fact, she probably should.

Cherche turns her attention back to the swimming cadets just to cheer them on. "Just a little further! You can do it!"

She smooths her skirt. "When should I send my report?"
