Test Drive Meme

The Pan Pacific Defense Corps was usually offered any of a variety of local buildings to set up their testing centers. For reasons of access and availability, most testing clinics were set up in central areas for any given community. Those of the PPDC staff on hand vary in their personal intensity. Some of the men and women wearing Strike Group insignia seemed overly serious, to the point of frowning with intensity at some of the youngest checking in for this testing round. Those from the K-Science division are tight with nervous energy as they direct prospective cadets through various activities. Everything was meant to measure potential, looking for that spark that meant they had somebody who was Drift Compatible.

The majority of people were turned away after the first series of seemingly random tests, officials looking in eyes, placing odd looking contraptions over heads, asking for people to play a series of short games, one even in a virtual reality set-up.

( SCENARIO ONE )

If you are still here now, you've made it past the first cut. You'll be sat down in a room with the rest who have made it this far, then systematically led into smaller interview rooms as pairs. If you came with a partner, they're your first interview candidate. If you came on your own, all your interviews are random assignment.

All who have been asked to stay are required to sit through and conduct a series of short peer to peer interviews. The questions are straightforward.
  1. What is your least favorite color?
  2. Which tool in a standard toolbox is most useful to you?
  3. What time of day do you accomplish the most?
  4. Do you have children?
  5. What do you believe the Drift is like?
Peer to peer interviews last for half an hour to an hour, and each person is asked to participate in at least three peer-to-peer interviews. There is no punishment for going off script. There is a one-way mirror looking into each interview area, and one door leading into the room with a small panel of glass located on the door. There is a clock on the wall in each room. The time they report is odd, when examined. These are not digital clocks, but timers, counting up time since the last Kaiju attack.

( SCENARIO TWO )

Congratulations! You have been judged Drift Compatible, and sent home to pack after giving a definite yes to the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. The next thing you face down is the flight into Santiago, Chile, and the subsequent drive in to Valparaíso's Shatterdome.

You and the rest of the crowd of soon to be PPDC Ranger Cadets have been gathered together to wait for the old bus scheduled to take you to the Shatterdome. While waiting in the open air, those from any Northern Hemisphere countries may find the summer weather strange. Today's high is going to be in the upper 80's, and there's not a cloud to be seen that's not clinging to the distant mountains.

Welcome to Chile. When the bus arrives, it's another hour ride out toward the coastline to get to the Shatterdome. Even better? The bus Air Conditioner is broken.

Safe travels, Cadets!

Please set up your own scenarios as you like. The above two scenarios are suggestions. Anything goes!

Apparently he'd said something wrong... Luke sighs, not exactly surprised, but not particularly bothered either. Whatever, he hadn't been looking for anything, he just wanted to tell Yuri thanks. He follows along at a deliberately slower pace so that Yuri doesn't feel like he has to jog to get away from him.

[He gives a light laugh in reply and takes the hand with a friendly but firm grip. Can you believe he's had to take classes on how to shake hands? It's nuts.]

Pleasure to meet you.

Worst case scenario, I know there's a cardboard box around here somewhere you can lay claim to.

[And as for orders and attention, well, he's always found that the attention find him and he's not really been in a position to bark orders. This is all pretty new for him to be honest. It'll take some getting used to.]

So where're you from, Blake?

"Yeah, I know that feeling. I didn't think we'd get in, either." A smirk, and it's true. They'd turned up for a fun day of What If and low and behold they were Drift compatible.

"I don't really think I'm allowed to teach." Raleigh answers. "A Ranger is on duty all the time. I have to be ready to go if the alarm sounds and being in class might disrupt that."

Not that he hadn't thought about it. Plus, you know, he's a young man in his twenties. He wants to help with the Academy but it wasn't all that long ago he was graduating, himself. He's not sure he wants to spend his free time in the classroom.

"Thought about holding some open sparring in the Kwoon if you're interested."

[ What, being sixteen and being the youngest to step in a conn-pod ain't good enough for you, Becket? Fuck you. ]

Yeah, y'know -- had some last minute shit we had to tie together, make sure that the place is still protected while we're gone. Can't leave a hole, 'n all that.

[Uuuh no? It's actually pretty cool if you ask him. Got him beat by two years. You gonna go around stealing all his thunder, Hansen?]

Right, yeah of course. We have the same thing on our end.

[He pauses and smiles, like he's been trying really hard to be cool about this but he's just too excited. Raleigh lightly crosses his arms over his chest.]

I'm so glad we were stationed together. I've been dyin' to meet you and workin' with your dad was such an honor.

"That's harsh. Where's your sense of turning over a new leaf," Guy sighs, as if deeply disappointed. As much as he didn't feel like he had a sense of humor lately, it was easy to spout absurdities when it suited how absurd the situation was.

"I think I'll go for the cool, unexplained angle," Guy waves off. "All I have to do is not be too specific. If I totally lie it'll just be a pain later."

Re: Guy Cecil | Tales of the Abyss

Guy's eyebrows go up, and it's an effort to resist glancing at the one-way window, so he certainly doesn't manage to mask it for Yuri. Rather than being impressed Yuri's stubbornness, he's amazed the man was only transferred instead of kicked completely out. Insubordination was no joking matter, not in any war - and especially not in this war.

It wasn't like the planet was crawling with Drift Compatible people, though. Plenty of hotshots made the cut anyway - and were media darlings, naturally. Did Yuri test that well? Were they hoping the right collar and leash would come along?

"Still nursing a vendetta against The Man, huh," Guy says dismissively, like he doesn't believe Yuri is truly serious for one second. "You sure have guts saying that in your position. But..." he pauses as he goes on, and a more sincere tone softens his voice. "... I'm glad you're serious enough to tolerate being transferred."

Otherwise, they may never would have met again. Despite all the damage, it was still a very big planet.
nisemoron: (Are you serious...)

[personal profile] nisemoron 2014-02-06 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's a good thing that they can't know each others' thoughts because they could easily argue the entire duration of the trip. As far as Yaichirou is concerned, their dire situation is all the more reason to be serious; the stakes are too high to give in to childish pleasures. If you allow yourself to take it easy on the details, soon you'll be slacking off on the things that mattered and before you know it you've contributed to the inevitable obliteration of the human race. It's a lot of pressure, but they knew what they were getting into when they enlisted. If she can't take it then maybe she should've stayed at home.

As it is, she's left him a little dumbfounded. If he follows her lead and smiles like that-- well for starters he looks absolutely ridiculous, but more importantly comes off as a pushover, and that's a sure invitation for more harassment. If he refuses, all that the half-attentive cadets around them will see is him picking a fight with a sweet-looking generous young woman. He would be branded a troublemaker before they've even arrived.

After some hesitation, his mouth twitches into something that's not totally unlike a smile, though it doesn't venture out to the rest of his face.

"No," he says through gritted teeth. "I suppose it wouldn't kill me."

The embarrassment might, though.

His eyes shine like they're practically diamonds as the tray gets passed his way. Such a bountiful second helping seems almost too good to be true. And it probably is.

"You serious? You barely ate anything!" He may be a walking vacuum, but he's still considerate of the needs of other people. Generally. A hand hovers over the tray, index finger pointing straight down. "You're gonna starve, and I don't wanna contribute to the near-death of a woman."

Especially not a pretty and generous one.

[personal profile] righthemisphere 2014-02-06 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably Raleigh's fault. He knew this was going to be an intense day but he didn't really realize what that meant. Busloads of new hopefuls vying for his attention, hundreds of pictures taken, hands shaken, the same ten questions over and over and over. A mob of admirers following him around literally everywhere.

So it's no surprise he's a little overwhelmed.

And it's any wonder he jumps back just in time.

"Ah-" He recovers. It's only water. "Hey, no harm done." Answered with an easy smile. "It's pretty busy in here."
righthemisphere: (I respect you so hard mako)

[personal profile] righthemisphere 2014-02-06 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
[Uh, yeah really. Chuck is kicking ass and Striker's fights are always astounding. Their Jaeger is a badass no doubt, but a Jaeger is only as good as it's pilots.]

Yeah. [He nods.] From the way he talked about you I'm not surprised you took over Left side. Must be amazing in there.

The people behind the glass new all too well--and Yuri knew they knew--that he'd never actually broken any major rules, aside form the incident that got him transferred. And he'd worked hard at the training, even if he'd been mulish about the officer training. At its core, Yuri believed in what the PPDC was doing, and he believed in the way it structured and presented itself. It was the uniforms he didn't trust. Coming from a neighborhood like his, where a cop was more like to rob you than a actual mugger, that wasn't much of a surprise. Authority was power, and power went to people's heads.

His eyes lock to Guy's again as he catches his tone, and he's thoughtfully quiet for a moment, studying Guy's face before me speaks. "Yeah," he says agreeably. And then, with an air of finality: "This is where I need to be."

Guy doesn't realize he's not breathing until he has his answer. He couldn't put a word to it before, but looking into Yuri's eyes felt... cutting. Like he wasn't ignoring how much he'd changed, but it didn't matter how much he tried to hide, either.

"Me too," he says.

It's all he can think to manage, but it's all he needs, anyway. No matter who he hated, or why, what he was afraid of, or even how strong he was. This was the only thing he'd done in a long time that made any sense.

I'm Kou.

[Volunteers Hitagi's partner in response to her odd greeting. He's stretching his calves a bit, and offering her an easy smile. He doesn't make any statements about his thletic abilities or otherwise, but he has a slender, well-toned physique, even if he's a bit on the short side.

His limbs are long in comparison to his body, and when he starts to run -she doesn't seem like she wants to lead, so he does- he sets an even pace at first. Once he realizes she's having no trouble keeping up, he'll mix it up a bit to keep them both on their toes.]

"We just arrived." The young man replies, smiling back when he sees that he hasn't inadvertently just caused a scene. He stifles a yawn and shrugs. "It feels like I've been awake for days."

Selecting the hammer brings a saying to mind, one that the old men are all fond of in his country. The nail that sticks up will be hammered down. But the girl's bright smile and curiosity make it less intimidating of a statement, most likely not loaded with any political commentary at all. How could she know the sayings from his home anyway? Just looking at her he can see that she's from somewhere very different. So Kou nods. Sure, a hammer could be useful. And she's right about the questions. They're pretty odd.

"Maybe it isn't the answers that they're looking for. They might want to see how we approach the situations?"
righthemisphere: (pic#7387834)

Nah you're good, mine are too. Can't be helped they've for goofy faces.

[personal profile] righthemisphere 2014-02-06 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Also a feeling he knows well.

"Yeah, the journey is a killer. But you're here now, so welcome to the the Valparaíso Shatterdome and Jaeger Academy." He holds out his hand for an official handshake.

"What's your name?"

He probably won't remember the first few times but it's polite to ask. He meets an unbelievable amount of people all the time. Small talk has become second nature.

"That's the general idea," Andy agrees, her own body language relaxing another degree. One on one is easier for her to handle than audiences and crowds. Unplanned as her participation really is, she finds she doesn't mind this.

"Not that anything happens if you go off list. For example, what's your favorite vegetable?"

Her lips pull up at the corner, more a suggestion of a smile than a full on grin.

"Allen wrench," she said without missing a beat. "Why a chisel?"

Not that it saved him from her asking the obvious question. It's as quick to come to mind to ask about his friend as well. "What kind of handy-work did your friend get up to?"

Kou hadn't planned to offer his name, since he'd been assuming that Mr. Becket was just around for the day and wouldn't be interested in knowing it. But when he's asked, it's only polite to respond.

"Kou Ichijo," he says, taking Raleigh's hand with only a hint of hesitation and giving him a good shake, paired with a slight incline that's something like an impulse to bow being stopped in its tracks. "And I already know yours. When I passed the first test I bought my sister a set of pilot dolls to help explain."

He was talking about the basic tenant of what Andrea believed in people as a whole. No one grew up in a vacuum. People are a result of themselves and their environment. It was good to hear Mike was aware of the relationship between people's behaviors and the places they came from.

"Disney tends to put the smooth edges on some ugly truths about the human condition," she said in a mild tone of voice. "We don't need Disney. We need real people, which means the kinds of people who're flawed and understand flaws in others. Those kinds of observations," said with a vague roll of her wrist, "Are the ones to keep in mind when you're working with teams spanning generation gaps. You'll be good to have in there at the ground level."

There wasn't any way to promise end results. There was only the anticipation for those who might be geared to succeed, and those who might have greater difficulties.

"What do you say we call this interview over, and I look forward to meeting you again someplace further south?"

Andy leaned forward and got to her feet in a fluid motion, holding a hand out to Mike once again.
doubleshot: (⚢ 20 steps but it’s so harming)

[personal profile] doubleshot 2014-02-06 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't an unusual question. Andy considers Yuri while she contemplates what to say, knowing she can fall back on the stock options if she wants. They're the easiest, the kind of canned answers she remembers when pulled out in front of a live studio audience.

Without an audience here, she's more at ease. "Yes and no," she says at last. "The more you don't want something coming out, the more likely it will. So if you've got things you want to hide, they're the first thing your partner will know, and it's the make or break it of the deal. I'm sure you've heard stories about the blow-outs between friends, family, lovers? Drifting takes you and someone else to a place you've never been before. You can't lie, you can't fake it without the other person going along with the pretense. It's not easy. Being able to Drift with more than one person is even harder."

Yet that was the entire reason for the second Academy, one that was going to ask people to do the improbable. Not only do the improbable, but do it well.

"If that puts you off, I suggest you walk out this door right now. Unless you're looking to work within the PPDC, surviving the first three months of the Academy puts you on the line for exactly that kind of denuding in front of one, two, three other human beings. They'll know you, and you'll know them. Neither one of you may like what you see."

The goal wasn't to keep people who might take issue like that working together, not through all the testing and the observation, but there was always that chance. Even people who got along most the time would have falling outs under the right (wrong?) kind of stresses.

"But if you think you can handle that, then stay. The kind of people we need in this project are the ones who can hear all that and not immediately turn around and run for the hills."

She see saws her hand, waggling it back and forth. "Now, three months down the line, on the other hand...!"

She may be joking around. Or she may be serious. It's difficult to tell from how she's holding herself, or how she speaks.

"How to approach the situation?" Leila briefly glances at the mirror, frowning mildly. She's not really confused as to what that means; she can tell that that seems to be the case, considering the questions don't really have a correct and exact answer. But what she can't tell is what kind of answers they are looking for. Should she answer them as straightforward as she can or should she be thinking of an answer outside the box?

And some of the questions are simply ... She once more looks up at her partner expectantly. "All right. Do you have children then?"

She skips number 3 for now, if only because the fourth one would definitely (or at least, she believes it would) show how one approaches the question or situation. After all it can't just be a yes or no answer, can it?
spareheir: (ha!)

That gets a laugh out of him. It feels good to laugh, it helps shake off some of the nerves that come of being observed by unseen individuals in tense circumstances. Kou shakes his head. No kids, thankfully.

"Just a baby sister."
